2008 is out with a whimper around here.

On a personal level, things are much the same, which are all truly to be thankful for. I am still married to a wonderful woman, I have a beautiful old home (that I can afford) fairly close to work in a walkable neighborhood. I am still employed by a firm that is very happy with my work. My firm is still pulling in work despite the economy. we are getting the sense that the smart clients are wanting to ensure they contract with a design firm that is still going well in this atmosphere so that they can feel confident the project will get finished.

I am preparing to take my Architectural Registration Exams, with the goal of taking one every 3 weeks beginning the middle of January. This will have me finishing up the last of them the end of May, which means the last results should be back by the first bit of July. I will have completed my IDP requirements by then, so once the final "pass" result arrives, the State Licensing Board will award me my license. I hope to have it by August, which is when my 20th high school reunion occurs.

On a national / global level, the national and global economy imploded the end of last year, due to a vicious circle of high energy prices, unsustainable debt levels, and the collapse of the housing bubble. The nation booted out the president upon whose watch this occurred, and voted in one who brought a message of change and hope, the color of his skin not withstanding. The government is attempting to inject money back into the system, knowing that the worst possible form of a collapse is when the money stops flowing.

We hear rumors of Obama putting together a "New Deal" akin to Roosevelt's program back during the depression, and hope that he puts together a plan that not only works to resuscitate the economy, but that moves the country away from the unsustainable form it has been in for the last hundred years, dependent upon diminishing supplies of fossil fuels, and towards one based upon renewable sources such as sunlight, wind, and water.

2009 will be interesting to live through. Hopefully, we will avoid the worst case scenarios, navigate our way through the treacherous waters filled with shoals upon which the ghostly ribs of shipwrecks warn us of the dangers, and break through into a brighter, better future.

Hope. It is a powerful thing.
