Survival...

Today has been a rough day so far.

The architectural firm I worked for laid off 25 people. Those of us that are left took a 10% pay cut.

If the business environment doesn't turn around by June... well, who knows what will happen to the firm.

I hate the relieved yet guilty feeling of being among those who made it through.

I am thankful though.

Thanks. The best thing that I can do is bring work in. Speaking of which, our firm is licensed in Mass.... what sort of hoops are required (and how high are they) to get our name on some of those contracts you write?

i expect you'd need to be somewhat local. we seem to like meeting with people in person.

drop me a note at work sometime the week after the one coming up (i'll need to recover a smidge, and empty my mailbox, and you might get lost in the shuffle otherwise) and i'll send you our qualifications questionnaire. doesn't mean your firm will hear from us, but it's at least a start.

Fair enough. Have a great time at Arisia, and let [livejournal.com profile] fabricdragon know that I survived another round of cuts. She'll be set up on Merchants Row as usual.

Yikes. Glad to hear you've survived so far, but that does make you twitchy, doesn't it?

If it's any comfort, I think the reason no one in my lab is getting laid off this winter is that I'm at home on maternity leave until March. The boss didn't come out and say it, but most of us were thinking it. And I think By's work is getting by because they've got a client with lots of money who's been giving them a series of large sculptural commissions. The counter has been having days where they never made $100 in sales.

Good luck. For everyone.

Thanks. Glad everyone is doing well up your way.

If things don't turn around by June I don't know what will happen. But I believe that they will.

Sheesh. I wonder how paid interns are faring?

[identity profile] tnrkitect.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Well, actually, I am a paid intern. But all interns that were hired that graduated in 2008 at our firm were among the laid off ones.

*hug*

Seems like it's starting to hit everywhere now. I'm glad you survived.

*crosses fingers* Positive thoughts for you during this difficult time.

[identity profile] tnrkitect.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the positive thoughts need to be along the lines of people deciding they need to build things again. So, if you know of any companies that are thinking about building, we are a great firm for them to talk to. (and before they ask, yes, we are licensed in Illinois).
