We also decided to go ahead and pull the trigger on switching from Sprint to Virgin Mobile pre-paid phones.

I have been with Sprint for 8 years now and have been mostly happy with them. Most recently, Jessica and I have been on the cheapest Family Plan that they offer, which included 550 shared minutes and nights and weekends starting at 7 pm. However, they no longer offer that plan, having bumped the lowest level up to 700 minutes and charging $10 more a month.

Between the two of us, we are lucky to use 300 minutes in a heavy use month.

Virgin Mobile pre-paid plans start at 200 minutes every 30 days for $20. Multiply by two people and that is $40 a month for the same level and type of service we had with Sprint.

By same service, I mean that Virgin Mobile uses the Sprint Network, so the service is identical.

This means we save $20 a month by switching.

A true no brainer there.

This also means that I can add texting (since I am starting to make fuller use of my Twitter account) and still come out ahead.

I decided to splurge, and picked up this phone for myself: http://www.virginmobileusa.com/phones/phoneDetail.do?skuId=VMM200 the Kyocera X-tc, a full featured phone with a slide-out qwerty keyboard.

Jessica likes a basic phone and could care less about texting, so she opted for this one: http://www.virginmobileusa.com/phones/phoneDetail.do?skuId=VMK325R the Kyocera Cyclops.

They are enroute to us via FedEx, and once they get here I'll call to get our current numbers ported over.

More features, less cost, same service, no contract.
